Introduction: A Snow Day Devotional

While Sunday service is canceled due to snow, we can use the day to:

  • Reflect on God’s work in nature

  • Spend time with family and friends

  • Engage in a brief devotional from home

As we’ve been studying prayer and scripture, this snow day offers a moment to notice God’s presence in the outdoors and His handiwork in creation.

1. God Revealed in Nature

Insights from “Heart Aflame” by Matthew Bingham:

  • God can be perceived through His creation

  • Nature teaches about God’s character, power, and glory

Scripture References:

  • Psalm 19:1 – “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”

  • Romans 1:20 – God’s eternal power and divine nature are evident in creation.

Examples in Nature:

  • Sunsets – God’s beauty and creativity

  • Storms or snow – God’s power and majesty

  • Crops and harvests – God’s provision and goodness

  • Death and seasons – The finiteness of life vs. God’s eternity

Reflection:

  • Take time to walk outside, breathe in the cold air, and notice the world around you.

  • Use nature to contemplate God’s attributes and reflect on His care for creation.

2. Learning from Scripture and Creation

Biblical Illustrations of Nature:

  • Psalm 23:1–3 – Green pastures and still waters as God’s provision

  • Matthew 13:3–8 – The Parable of the Sower shows how hearts receive God’s Word

  • Proverbs 6:6 – The ant teaches diligence and preparation

Practical Application:

  • Observe rain nourishing the ground, trees preparing for spring, and snow covering imperfections.

  • Scripture gives us the foundation to understand God’s work in nature; it confirms what we perceive visually.

3. Snow as a Symbol of Forgiveness

Scriptural References:

  • Isaiah 1:16–18 – “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.”

  • Psalm 51:7 – “Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”

  • Proverbs 31:21 – The godly woman is prepared for snow, not fearful of it.

  • Psalm 91:1 – God provides shelter and protection.

Reflection:

  • Snow visually reminds us of Christ’s cleansing power and forgiveness.

  • Just as snow covers the imperfections of the ground, God’s grace covers our sins and renews us.

Personal Insight:

  • Childhood memories of snowball fights and snowy fields connect to God’s provision and playful joy in creation.

  • Observing snow reminds us to notice God’s work in our lives and those around us.

4. Application: Embrace the Snow Day

Practical Suggestions:

  • Go outside and take in the beauty of the snow

  • Reflect on God’s attributes revealed in creation

  • Spend intentional time with family, friends, or in prayer

  • Share the significance of snow with children or neighbors

  • Contemplate God’s forgiveness and provision

Encouragement:

  • Snow days are opportunities to pause, refresh, and recognize God’s presence in both nature and life.
